How the UK already Supported a Jewish State in 1917 – The Balfour Declaration

The concept of a Jewish state was not born after the holocaust in the second world war. The Zionist idea of a Jewish state goes back to 1897. This article wants to focus on the fact that the British cabinet already expressed its support for a Jewish State in the area of Palestine when it was still part of the Ottoman Empire, although they would conquer that land the next year.

Lord Balfour (1) answered a letter to Lord Walter Rothschild (2) in which he basically promised the Jewish people Palestine. Here’s the text of the letter (3):


Foreign Office
November 2nd, 1917


Dear Lord Rothchild

I have much pleasure in conveying to you. on behalf of His Majesty’s Government, the following declaration of sympathy with Jewish Zionist aspirations which has been submitted to, and approved by, the Cabinet

His Majesty’s Government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavors to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.

I should be grateful if you would bring this declaration to the knowledge of the Zionist Federation.

In the critical analysis in the video above I came across an interesting quote by Arthur Koestler (5) who said: “One nation solemnly promised to another nation the country of a third“.

    Balfour’s letter highlights the fact that Britain failed to keep it’s word. The current conflict has little to do with October 7, rather it continues on with Israel’s aim to control all of Palestine, knowing it has the support of the West.
