After the killing of the political leader of Hamas, Ismael Haniyeh on July 31, 2024 in the Iranian capital of Tehran (11), videos emerged on how Israel was partly responsible for the creation of this religious Palestinian resistance movement. This article provides some background to these claims based on a video from the investigative journalism platform ‘The Intercept‘ (1).

DIVIDE AND RULE POLICY OF ISRAEL
In the 1970s Israel supported Sheikh Ahmed Yassin to start the precursor of what would later become Hamas. The reason to support the creation of a religious islamist group in Gaza was simple: they could grow to undermine the huge influence of Yasser Arafat’s Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO). A classic divide and rule policy.

In the excerpt below various people are quoted as saying that indeed Israel partly funded Hamas for the above reason. You can hear Ron Paul (7) saying: “Hamas was encouraged and really started by Israel, because they wanted Hamas to counteract Yasser Arafat“. Arafat himself said that Hamas was a creation of Israel.

Brigadier Yitzhak Segev said how he helped finance the Islamic movement: “The Israeli government gave me a budget and military government gives to the mosques“. Other officials like Colonel David Hacham and Avner Cohen are also admitting it. Sheikh Yassin himself would eventually be assassinated by an Israeli airstrike.

As if all that isn’t enough you can hear the former Prime Minister of Israel, Ehud Barak, say that Netanyahu pleaded for Hamas support as the ultimate way to prevent the two-state solution to become a reality.

The way Israel assisted in the creation of Hamas, reminds me of the way the United States was responsible for the creation of the Mujahideen/Taliban in their attempt to chase the Soviets out of Afghanistan (6).

Some people suggest that both the Israeli government and Hamas are really on the same side, namely on the side to create chaos and war, with the common people on the other side, suffering the most from all this warmongering madness.
