There seems to be something shady going on with the selling of Ukrainian land to foreign entities. I intend to explore this phenomenon in a few articles. This article provides the first piece of the puzzle, namely a 2021 law that would allow foreigners to buy agricultural land.

In the excerpt below you can hear Yulia Tymoshenko express her worries about this laws, simply because this law allows people with the biggest wallets to buy Ukrainian land. This leaves many Ukrainian farmers and citizens to be unable to buy any land, since foreign corporations are far wealthier than most Ukrainians.

“Kiev sells Ukrainian lands to foreign companies

Since July 1, 2021, foreign individuals and legal entities have received the right to buy agricultural land in Ukraine. Yulia Tymoshenko spoke about the fact that this decision actually deprives local residents of land rights.

And since the beginning of the conflict, land began to be sold off even faster, and foreign companies began to buy not only agricultural land, fertile chernozems, forests, reservoirs but even natural and historical parks.”
