We have spoken about the non-GMO wolbachia mosquitoes in another article (1). We noticed the support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for that Australia based project. This article, however, is about mosquitoes that are genetically modified.

Bill Gates loves to tinker with life and he paid a British company ‘Oxitec’ (2) at least 8 million US Dollars to create a new species of mosquitoes. The males of these mosquitoes, dubbed the OX513A strain of Aedes Aegypti, were given a ‘self-limiting gene’.

These males only mate with the females of the target population. Their offspring would also receive this self-limiting gene, which would lead to these females to die. Since only the females are the ones that bite and suck blood, the problem of mosquitoes passing diseases like Zika and Dengue would be gone.

Although the initial results seemed to be very positive, things changed after 18 months. It was discovered that the males and local females were creating hybrid offspring that was stronger than ever before. The results were disastrous.

As Janet Ossebaard (3,4) says in the above excerpt these results were not broadly shared in the media. They did, however, show up in (scientific) articles (8-12)

SOME REFLECTIONS
It seems that Oxitec’s GMO-mosquitoes are not really living up to the expectations and are likely creating stronger new variants of mosquitoes, that might be more resistant to insecticides. In (8) we can read: “Also, introgression may introduce other relevant genes such as for insecticide resistance. The release strain, OX513A, was derived from a laboratory strain originally from Cuba, then outcrossed to a Mexican population. The three populations forming the tri-hybrid population now in Jacobina (Cuba/Mexico/Brazil) are genetically quite distinct (Extended Data Fig. E2), very likely resulting in a more robust population than the pre-release population due to hybrid vigor.”

The main reason for exploring the ways scientists are trying to prevent the transfer of mosquito-borne diseases were a few videos that mentioned the release of (genetically modified) mosquitoes in the states of Florida (13) and Texas in 2024.
