Dutch Universities receive Money to Promote EU-Narratives

The Dutch neurologist Jan Bonte (1) posted an interesting tweet on his channel about grants from the European Union for all kinds of organizations in the Netherlands and Belgium (2). What make these grants special is that they were given to combat misinformation. This article provides some background on this phenomenon.

CENSORSHIP AND FREE SPEECH AND THE EUROPEAN UNION
We have seen quite a few examples of the way the European Union (EU) is not a true supporter of free speech. Instead of promoting the free distribution of opinions the European Union has presented itself as a referee that is able to determine what European citizens are allowed to know and what not. They have decided that they have the noble task to inform their citizens on what is the right narrative. They seem to want to turn their citizens into ideal citizens that simply believe their truth (4).

That’s why the European Union doesn’t like people expressing opinions that are different than theirs. They don’t like platforms like ‘X’, and they even tried to make a shady deal with Elon Musk, who refused to cooperate with their agenda to stiffle opposing views (5). They brand people with other opinions as ‘conspiracy theorists’ to silence and ridicule them (6).

They make sure that their Ukraine-Russia story is not questioned by censoring Russian media (7,8). Ursula von der Leyen, the grand beacon of European Values, has even proposed to ‘prebunk’ information (9). We have seen how the transparancy of the EU functions when it comes to deals with pharmaceutical companies, who are also heavily protected by the EU narratives (10,11).

SPONSORING UNIVERSITIES TO STUDY WAYS TO PROMOTE EU CENSORSHIP
On the website of the European Union you can see a list of Dutch and Belgian institutes that received money to defend the EU Narratives (12). The objective of the program is clearly described:

Objective

The vast amount of conspiracy theories and disinformation that coexist alongside genuine information threatens an open, well-functioning and pluralistic information ecosystem that is key to effectively functioning democracies. Most research on fact-checking and disinformation has neglected the Dutch and Belgian setting. Yet the rise of political polarisation, misconceptions about COVID-19 and migrant communities, and declining trust in media organizations have sparked serious concerns in civil society across both EU member states and internationally.

EDMO BE/NL establishes a regional hub of experts in the Netherlands and Belgium engaged in the research of and fight against disinformation. The hub will monitor emerging disinformation campaigns and produce and publish fact-checks. Tools for automated network analysis and NLP technology to detect and analyse disinformation will be evaluated and integrated in the EDMO Core Service Platform.

A lab environment will be created to test the effectiveness of strategies to counter disinformation. The lab will study misinformation from three perspectives: empirical (how to recognize disinformation), practical (how to monitor the effectiveness of fact-checking interventions) and a policy perspective (how these interventions fit in the legal EU frameworks). The project will equip stakeholders with knowledge, skills and resources to bring media literacy to the attention of a broad audience.” (12)

WHO RECEIVED THESE EU GRANTS?
Here’s the list of institutions that received money from the European Union to carry out this ‘war on disinformation‘. Besides 3 universities we can also see that State Television and a Dutch Press Agency are sponsored to help the EU in spreading their narratives. The fact that Bellingcat receives money from the EU makes it less likely that they will investigate anything that goes against the EU narratives.

When it comes to universities we have seen a few examples that might interest you. There’s one story on a Professor who was fired because he openly said that the Great Barrier Reef was doing fine (14), and another on a dr. whose contract was not extended because she proved that Polar Bears were doing great on the Arctic (15).

Universities don’t seem to like people who spread information that goes against the main narratives, whether it is on man made climate change, vaccinations, the gender confusion movement or the reality of the Ukraine-Russia war.
