Triggered by the endless killings by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip (1) and its weird ties with the US (2-4), I ran into this account surrounding the number of Jews that were killed at Auschwitz during the second world war. This page presents some background to the seeming lowering of the death count in Auschwitz from 4 million to about 1.1 million people. There is no controversy about this as you can read in this article.

FOUR MILLION PEOPLE DIED HERE
After World War II, a Polish-Russian commission estimates the number of people that would have been killed at Auschwitz between 1940-1945:

“WW2 is over and a joint Russian/Polish commission goes to investigate Auschwitz. They have blueprints in hand and confessions/witnesses to prove what happened. Above all, though they have the document from Karl Bischoff (head of Auschwitz construction) which outlines the cremation capacity at 4.7k per day

They know from 1940–1941 only 1,000–2,000 could be cremated per day and in early 1943–1945 4,756 could be cremated per day. They take this total cremation capacity, multiply it by 5 years, and subtracted 20% of downtime and maintenance.

Through this equation, they come to 4 million. Now, this is important- there was never any documentation to back this up.” (5)

FROM FOUR MILLION TO 1.1 MILLION
While the Russians came to their conclusion Western Scholars accurately determined (and proved) 1.1 million had actually died. Using deportation documents, train schedules, witness statements, and population statistics we could prove that 1.3 million were sent to the camp. We know 200k survived and thus, 1.1 million died.

SOME REFLECTIONS
As we can read in the above text the estimate of 4 million was based on a very rough estimate by the Russians and Poles. This apparently was wrong and after the fall of the Soviet Union this ‘Soviet Propaganda’ number was changed to a scholarly sound 1.1 million. I think this reasoning below makes sense:

“Holocaust deniers present this like we all believed 4 million died at Auschwitz until brave holocaust deniers proved us wrong and got the number changed. In reality, we immediately knew the real number and the “4 million” statistic only stuck around like a piece of Soviet propaganda. No scholar ever considered 4 million to be the actual number. You see how Holocaust denial arguments are based on ignorance more than actual “proof”.” (5)

The article goes on to prove with documents and through various sources that Treblinka was a real extermination camp with 900,000 Jews being killed (5).
