We have gathered quite a few arguments to seriously question the highly sponsored man-made climate change narrative (1-3). We have also seen that this narrative is used to enforce all kinds of regulations on people (4-7). I used to ignore one of the craziest stories in this realm, namely the one on combatting the farts of cows because of their contribution to ‘global warming’.

However, when I learned that this madness actually led to a certain questionable drug or food additive to be added to the feed of cows, I wanted to know a bit more about this: I might be actually drinking or eating the result of this absurd cow fart story.

This article introduces Bovaer, a product that is regarded as a drug in the United States, but a food additive in the European Union and the UK. Let’s start off with this analysis by Jefferey Jaxen in Bigtree’s The Highwire:

THE FDA’S APPROVAL OF BOVAER AS A DRUG IN 2024
In May 2024 the FDA approved Bovaer (8), but unlike the European Union and the UK they considered it a drug and not a food additive and the reason given is that it changes processes in the organism. As Jefferey Jaxen said in the above excerpt the FDA approved the product solely based on the information provided by Elanco, the company that distributes Bovaer 10, that is produced by DSM-Firmenich (9-11).

WARNINGS
In the package insert we can find the following warning:

“Not for human use. Caution should be exercised when handling this product. 3-nitrooxypropanol may damage male fertility and reproductive organs, is potentially harmful when inhaled, and is a skin and eye irritant. Personal protective gear, including eye wear, a dust mask, and impervious gloves, should be worn when handling this product. Operators should wash hands after handling. If accidental eye exposure occurs, rinse eyes thoroughly with water. The safety data sheet contains more detailed occupational safety information.“

EFSA Study 2021 and the accumulation of 3-NOP in muscle tissue
Jaxen refers to a study done by the European Food Safey Agency (13) that measured how much of the 3-NOP was still in the body of rats after use. They found that…

“In tissues, the highest concentrations were found in the liver (184.5 μg 3-NOP-eq/g), adrenal glands (159.3 μg 3-NOP-eq/g) and kidney (118.4 μg 3-NOP-eq/g). Low concentrations were found in fat (58.9 μg 3-NOP-eq/g), muscle (42.4 μg 3-NOP-eq/g) and brain (24.8 μg 3-NOP-eq/g).“

“Based on the above, the FEEDAP Panel concludes that the genotoxicity potential of 3-NOP cannot be ruled out.” (see paragraph 3.2.3.3. from (13))

In the paragraph on genotoxicity you can read about rat experiments where various doses of 3-NOP were administered. Higher doses led to complete infertility of the rats. Lower doses didn’t seem to make a difference.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
The 3-NOP chemical is inserted in the feed and is metabolized in the rumen, effectively blocking the function of the enzyme methanogen that produces methane from hydrogen and carbon dioxide. It is said to be completely broken down in the stomach and it wouldn’t end up in the milk.

SOME REFLECTIONS
Like I said in the introduction the main reason for using this Bovaer chemical is to ‘help fight global warming‘, which is a highly contestable reason, since there is no consensus that global warming would be man (or cow-) made. Then there is this product that interferes in the natural digestive process of animals.

How do we know this doesn’t produce all kinds of unwanted side-effects? In a wikipedia-page on the enzyme that is targeted (methanogen) we can read that they play a crucial role in maintaining gut balance by utilizing end products of bacterial fermentation, such as H₂, acetate, methanol, and methylamines.

Then there are the warnings: why would farmers need to wear protective gear when they add this product to their feed? And why is considered a drug in the US and just a food-additive in the European Union? The FDA obviously didn’t run a test themselves on the product and just believed what the producer gave them as test results.

If a study shows that 3-NOP is not totally metabolised, but molecules actually seem to accumulate in the liver, the adrenal glands and to a lesser degree in muscle tissue, the claim that it would completely metabolize doesn’t seem valid. Can we be really sure that it doesn’t end up in the meat and in the dairy products? See (17) for the companies that would already support the use of Bovaer in their products, like Arla and Nestlé.
