Sometimes it can be useful to go back in time a little. Triggered by the appearance of Islamist fighters in Ukraine (1) and the brutal killing spree of four Tajik men in the Crocus Theater in Moscow (2) I decided to pay some attention to a few words by the former secretary of State and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton who honestly spoke about the way the US had created their Islamist Fighting Force, the Mujahideen to fight the Soviet Union in Afghanistan back in the 1980s.

This US plan was successful, in the sense that it finally led to the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan. Of course it did also cast a well-trained islamic shadow into the future, which was a slightly less positive outcome. This operation to create the Mujahideen was called ‘Operation Cyclone‘ (4).
