Governments often claim that they are fighting misinformation or disinformation (1). Some governments, like the Brazilian government ask advice on how to combat disinformation from a US CIA director (2). In the excerpt below you can see two examples of government disinformation campaigns both leading to two wars of Iraq in 1990 and 2003 (3,4).
The presenter in the video belows openly wonders if we should trust the government when it comes to their story on Ukraine (5) and there is a shot of Greta Thurnberg (6) too. These examples of government disinformation has caused the death of hundreds of thousands of people. Perhaps it is a wise thing to think twice when a government tells their citizens to just trust them, and believe them when they condemn others as conspiracy theorists (7) spreading misinformation.
In the above excerpt you can hear the false story on the assault on the babies in the incubators that was told by the daughter of the Kuwaiti Ambassador to the United States. Then there is that famous lie by Colin Powell, the US Secretary of State in which he allegedly provided proof of Saddam Hussein having (biological) weapons of mass destruction.
We have also presented you with an example in which the United Nations are actively partnering with Google to make sure their information (on vaccines for instance) is on top of the results (8). We also know that the judiciary system in Brazil has been actively trying to silence people whose opinion they don’t like (9). The Australian Government seems to think that they can determine what the rest of the world is able to see or not (10).

(1) I looked up the difference between misinformation and disinformation, and the difference is the intent of the spreading of wrong information. In the case of misinformation it is done unintentionally, but in the case of disinformation it is done on purpose (2). The two lies that led us into the two wars on Iraq were obvious examples of disinformation.
