Comparing CO2-levels and Temperatures in Modern Times

We have seen that levels of CO2 were much higher in the ancient past (1) and that CO2 doesn’t seem to be driving temperature change, but that it is more likely the other way round (2). We discovered that much of the global warming temperatures are the result of the Urban Heat Island effect (3). But what if we compare modern CO2 levels and temperatures, when we use thermometer readings from rural areas only?

In the excerpt below we are presented with two graphs (see image): the one on the left shows the temperatures since 1880 (4) and the one on the right shows the CO2-concentration since 1750 (5). There are a few remarkable things to be deducted when we compare the two.

The CO2-concentration is almost exponentially rising from the 1880s onwards, with a strong growth from the 1950s onwards. In the 1940s it was almost as warm as in 2020, which is odd, since you would expect a huge increase of temperature after a huge increase in the CO2-concentration. And just when the level of CO2 starts to rise sharply from the 1950s to the 1970s the temperatures are sharply declining. How is that possible? People in the 1970s were even talking about the prospects of a coming ice ages during those days.

Watch the scientists in the excerpt below discuss these odd elements in the comparison between the temperature changes and the CO2-concentration.
